Medical College of Wisconsin
The Medical College of Wisconsin recently received a five-year, $9 million renewal program project grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health to study how inhaled anesthetic drugs impact the heart. Zeljko Bosnjak, professor and vice chairman for research of anesthesiology and professor of physiology, is program director for this multi-department program project. The researchers have long studied the effects of inhalational anesthetics on the heart, and more recently shown ways in which anesthetic drugs can protect the heart against injury that results from inadequate blood flow or oxygen. In addition to Bosnjak, the team consists of Dr. David Warltier, professor and chairman of anesthesiology; and Dr. Judy Kersten, professor and vice chair of anesthesiology.
The Medical College of Wisconsin also recently received a two-year, $346,766 grant from the National Cancer Institute to study the association between breast cancer therapies and non-spinal bone fractures in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors.
Dr. Joan Neuner, assistant professor of medicine in the division of general internal medicine, is principal investigator for the grant. Bone fractures are among the most common causes of injury for breast cancer survivors, particularly among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. The risk of fracture in breast cancer patients has been found to be higher than in the general population, and clinical trials have suggested that certain drugs used to treat breast cancer increase the risk of fracture by 40 percent.
Dr. Neuner will determine the five-year incidence of hip and total non-spinal fractures among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors compared with age-matched Medicare enrollees. The study will provide data for the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures in older breast cancer patients and their relationship to cancer therapies. The results will guide counseling and treatment initiatives for osteoporosis among breast cancer survivors.

The My Patient Passport Express kiosk allows patients to check-in, make future appointments, and update their medical history, all using a touchscreen. Patients can use their credit card to make co-pay payments, and sign documents using the integrated electronic signature pad.
Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin
Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Wauwatosa, and ProHealth Care, Waukesha, recently announced their plans to create a Children’s Hospital inside Waukesha Memorial Hospital. This type of arrangement is referred to as a “hospital within a hospital” model.
The new Children’s Hospital would include Waukesha Memorial Hospital’s existing 22-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and eight-bed inpatient pediatric unit, which would be staffed and operated by Children’s Hospital. The goal is to provide Children’s Hospital care close to home for children in the Waukesha County area.
Aurora Health Care
Three Aurora Health Care facilities were recently ranked among top U.S. hospitals identified by Thomson Reuter as having demonstrated the fastest, most consistent improvement over five consecutive years.
Aurora West Allis Medical Center and Aurora BayCare Medical Center of Green Bay were ranked in the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders, 5th Edition in the medium
community hospital category, while Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers was listed under small community hospitals. The only other Wisconsin hospital namedm was Meriter Hospital in Madison, under the teaching hospitals category.
Berghammer Construction
Berghammer Construction, Butler, recently began work on a new worship facility for Christ Church. The 27,700-square-foot worship facility will be located at the southeast corner of Bonniwell Road and Port Washington Road in Mequon. This building features a natural stone veneer with exterior giving it a lodge-like appearance. The inside gathering area incorporates wood beams and cathedral ceilings. The two-story tall sanctuary, will seat 400 people. The facility will include classrooms and other community amenities. Construction and is scheduled to conclude in May of 2009.
Almon, Inc.
Almon Inc., Waukesha, was recently elected to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) recently elected ten other companies to membership in the international trade group, which provides business-development resources for companies which manufacture and market agriculture and construction-related equipment, products and services.
Stay-Lite Lighting
Stay-Lite Lighting recently presented its EnvironLITE Achievement Award to the Waukesha County Eble and Naga-Waukee ice arenas. The award recognizes the arenas’ investment and commitment to reducing energy consumption by installing energy efficient lighting systems. Stay-Lite partnered with both arenas to assess, plan and implement the improvements. Existing 400 watt metal halide fixtures were removed and replaced. Also, T12 magnetic fixtures were replaced with a T8 electronic system. Four-foot T8 Hi-Bay 6-lamp fixtures were then installed, as well as new LED exit signs. At Eble Ice Arena, lumin depreciation and color shifting were corrected and lighting levels were increased from 25.57 foot-candles to 65.01 foot-candles. Total energy reduction was measured to be 18.905 kilowatts and 64,532.55 kilowatt hours. Total energy reduction at the Naga-Waukee Ice Arena was measured to be 15.039 kilowatts and 49,811.40 kilowatt hours.
Zizzo Group Advertising and Public Relations
Zizzo Group Advertising and Public Relations, Milwaukee, recently announced the launch of a financial literacy communications outreach program for St. Paul, Minn.-based Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union. Affinity Plus is the largest, not-for-profit credit union with state-based assets in Minnesota. Zizzo Group worked with the credit union to launch “Affinity Plus On The Money,” an integrated media program aimed at helping Minnesota consumers make smarter financial decisions.
Seroka
Seroka, Waukesha, was recently retained by Genmar Yacht Group, Pulaski, to introduce its new Carver 44′ Sojourn via a vibrant print and web campaign. The unveiling of Genmar’s new yacht took place at the annual Carver Dealer Conference. Genmar needed a fresh marketing perspective that showcased the features of their new yacht and contracted Seroka to develop those concepts.
Briohn Building Corp.
Briohn Building Corp., Brookfield, was recently contracted to design and construct a new 21,600-square-foot warehouse addition for Baysan Company, Inc, Pewaukee. Briohn has been contracted to construct a 3,500-square-foot oral surgery center for American Dental Partners, Inc. at the Bayshore Town Center. In addition, Briohn has completed the design and construction of new whitebox space for LyLy Nails at the Bayshore Town Center.
