Two apartment projects are moving forward in Greenfield and Greendale that would create a total of 340 new rental units in the southwest suburbs.
This week, the Greenfield Plan Commission endorsed a plan by Ener-Con Companies to convert a 30-unit condominium building at 4380 S. 110th St., near Highway 100 and Cold Spring Road, into an apartment building and build the remaining five 30-unit apartment buildings, creating a total of 180 units.
The city originally approved Ener-Con’s plans for the project, called Greenfield Highlands, in 2007, but at that time it was for six 30-unit condos, said Charles Erickson, manager of community development.
During the Great Recession, those plans were put on hold. The one building that has been built is partly occupied, Erickson said. The Greenfield City Council will have to hold a public hearing on the project in July, before Greenfield-based Ener-Con can move forward.
In Greendale, the plan commission recommended approval Wednesday for a proposal by General Capital Group and Milwaukee-based Robert Joseph Properties for an apartment complex on the east side of the JCPenney store at Southridge Mall, 5300 S. 76th St.

The complex would include three buildings with a total of 160 one- and two-bedroom units and underground parking.
The complex would include a clubhouse between the two buildings on the west side of the development and a courtyard linking the north and south buildings.
The village is hoping the apartments will improve the vitality of Southridge. The site is the location of a former tire, battery and auto center.
Marcus Theaters is planning to build an eight-screen movie theater complex in the northeast corner of the Southridge Mall property.
The Greendale Village Board will vote on the apartment proposal on May 17.
