Summerfest breaks ground on redevelopment of festival park’s south end

A groundbreaking ceremony was held recently by Milwaukee World Festival Inc. to celebrate the start of construction for the redevelopment of the south end of Maier Festival Park on Milwaukee’s lakefront.
Milwaukee World Festival selected Milwaukee-based Eppstein Uhen Architects to do the design work for the planned redevelopment of 22 acres on the south end of the Henry Maier Festival Park. The project will completely rebuild the area of the Summerfest grounds between the Harley-Davidson stage and the Marcus Amphitheater. The project will include the redevelopment of the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard stage and the M&I Classic Rock stage area. The scope of the project will not include renovating the Marcus Amphitheater.
Summerfest’s south end redevelopment project will be tackled in two phases and include a new south gate, box office, stages, bathrooms, restaurants, walkways and other features. Phase 1 of the construction process will be completed by Summerfest 2011. Phase 2 will commence after the 2011 festival season with the entire project scheduled to be completed in time for the 45th Anniversary of Summerfest in 2012.
