State Rep. Jeff Stone has entered the fray for Milwaukee County executive, saying he will continue the “bold and decisive leadership” of Scott Walker.
“I vow to work with anybody and everybody that is willing to taking responsible and effective measures to deal with the challenges our county is facing,” Stone said. “Together, we can put Milwaukee County back to work and offer future generations a great place to live, work, play and visit.”
Stone is the only Republican so far to announce for the campaign to replace Governor-elect Scott Walker, who says he’ll resign his post Dec. 27 to ensure a special election can be held in conjunction with the normally scheduled spring elections. Walker said a standalone special election could cost the county $1.2 million.
Democrats are already sharpening their knives for Stone, with Dem Chair Mike Tate promising an "unprecedented" party commitment to this spring’s elections that will focus on turnout efforts the party normally does only in the fall.
Tate also dismissed Stone as a Walker wannabe and said he should be running for Waukesha County exec rather than the Milwaukee County post, considering the number of times he’s voted against Milwaukee’s interests.
"Milwaukee County cannot afford another Scott Walker," Tate said. "Milwaukee County has already been dragged into the Dark Ages by Scott Walker. It cannot now afford a Stone Age."
