Shopko Inc., has announced that Milwaukee-based St. Marcus School has won its “Choose the Charity” contest and will receive a $10,000 donation from the Shopko Foundation
The contest ran from February 13 through March 12 on Shopko’s Facebook page.
“We are thrilled to see so many people came out in support of St. Marcus during this contest,” said Henry Tyson, superintendent of St. Marcus School. “Thank you to the Shopko Foundation for including St. Marcus and thank you to those who voted. The funds from this gift will be crucial in completing the next steps of our campus expansion project and opening doors to more central city students.”
The grant will be used towards a campus expansion project, which is also being supported by a $1 million Challenge Grant from the M&I Foundation. As part of the challenge grant, ShopKo’s donation will be matched with $4,000 by M&I.
In addition to St. Marcus School, the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery of Spokane, Wash.; The Children’s Center of Salt Lake City, Utah; The House of Hope in Green Bay, Wisc; and One World Community Health Centers in Omaha, Neb. were chosen to participate in the contest.
Shopko’s Facebook fans were encouraged to visit www.facebook.com/shopko to learn about each organization and vote for the group that they wanted to receive the donation. Thousands of votes were cast by fans nationwide and the results were St. Marcus School 2,487 votes, One World Community Health Centers 2,077 votes, House of Hope 1,321 votes, Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery 532 votes and The Children’s Center 357 votes. Each of the four runners-up will receive a $1,000 donation from the Shopko Foundation.
“On behalf of the entire Shopko team, our congratulations go out to St. Marcus School. Our Facebook fans have recognized the school’s outstanding work and commitment to prepare students for success in college and beyond,” said Paul Jones, Shopko president and CEO. “Like all of these great organizations, Shopko is committed to giving back to the communities where we are privileged to do business. We are proud to support them and the effort they each put forth every day to make our communities a better place to live.”
Shopko representatives will be present Tyson and other St. Marcus School officials with the $10,000 check next week.
