The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a two-year, $300,000 grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation for Spinal Cord Injury Research to evaluate recovery and care for spinal cord injury patients.
The primary investigator on the project is Matthew Budde, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurosurgery at MCW. Shekar Kurpad, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of neurosurgery at MCW and a neurosurgeon at Froedtert Hospital and the Clement Zablocki VA Medical Center; and Brian Schmit, Ph.D., professor of biomedical engineering at Marquette University, will also be part of the project.
The aim of the study is to use magnetic resonance imaging to more accurately diagnose and provide recovery prognosis for spinal cord injury patients. The team will use an MRI technique called diffusion tensor imaging to monitor spinal cord structure changes post-injury.
