After seeing growing demand for activity-themed bars, Marla and David Poytinger are rolling out their fourth such concept in Milwaukee.

The husband and wife duo own Milwaukee-based Bars and Recreation, which operates axe-throwing bar AXE MKE, mini-golf bar Nine Below and painting bar Splash Studio, all located on Milwaukee’s East Side. Late this summer, they will add NorthSouth Club to that list.

The concept, which will occupy a 12,000-square-foot space at 230 E. Pittsburgh Ave. in Walker’s Point, will feature axe-throwing and floor shuffleboard, transporting patrons from “the rugged northern tundra of flannel and beer” to the “southern shores of flip flops and umbrella drinks,” according to an announcement.

“We wanted to meet the demand for axe-throwing, but also bring another activity to the city,” said David Poytinger in a statement. “Milwaukee culture is shifting away from just a night at the bar. When much of your life is spent in front of a computer or device, you’re ready to break out for a night and do something interactive with friends.”

With its full bar and space for up to 300 people, NorthSouth Club will function as a venue to host private events and its own league play and “special-themed events.”

Construction on the space is slated to begin in late March. When finished, it will include tall ceilings, large skylights, and garage doors that will open during the summer.

Bars and Recreation opened AXE MKE in June 2018, and it recently relocated Splash Studio from the Historic Third Ward to its current East Side location. Nine Below opened in 2016.
