Cocina 1022, a Mexican restaurant that opened last year in Walker’s Point, announced this week it has closed.
The restaurant opened in April 2018 at 1022 S. 1st St., the space formerly occupied by French restaurant Chez Jaques.
Cocina 1022, which was operated by mother-son duo Kevin Lopez and Judith Figueroa of El Grupo E&A LLC, served “new takes” on authentic Mexican dishes, along with cocktails. Figueroa also operates Judy’s On North, at 2207 E. North Ave, the location of the former Jalisco’s on North.
“Over the past year and few months we had the chance to be part of a turning page for Mexican food here in Milwaukee,” the Cocina 1022 post said. “…first we want to thank all of our guests for supporting us, our amazing Walkers Point/Harbor District neighborhood and Mexican cuisine. Thank you all so much as you have all been such a key component to our past, present and future and most importantly our growth. We loved every encounter and meal enjoyed, even all the hiccups in the beginning months.”
The restaurant’s Facebook post also hinted at possible future ventures.
“.. Cocina 1022 isn’t done just yet. We can’t wait to gather what we have done and what we have learned to continue to embark on what is already happening, with restaurants like Tavo’s Signature Cuisine and Mazorca Tacos this thing is just getting started.”
Jesus Gonzalez, owner of Mazorca taco trailer, is planning to open a new bar and adjoining “food truck park” in a vacant 2,226-square-foot building located at 636 S. 6th St. in Walker’s Point, according to a recently filed city license application.
Cocina 1022 owners could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
