Around 1,000 college interns from businesses in the Milwaukee and Waukesha area volunteered at literacy fairs across southeastern Wisconsin, on Thursday afternoon, without access to electronic devices that have become so ubiquitous among members of their generation, the mention of one often conjures the image of the other: their smartphones.

The United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County organized the massive volunteer event, called Intern Day of Action, which sent college interns to 15 different fairs in the area participating in an International literacy Fair event to give them an opportunity “to see the immediate and visible impact they, as individuals, can have on their community through volunteerism,” according to a statement released by the organization.

Interns were asked to post a picture of themselves on their social media accounts before volunteering accompanied by the following message: “I’m putting down my phone. I #PledgetoBePresent @UnitedWayGMWC #InternDayofAction.”
