LORI BERGEN, dean of the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University, and HERBERT LOWE, journalism professional in residence at Marquette and former National Association of Black Journalists president, addressed members of the Marquette University chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists Tuesday at the Newsroom Pub in Milwaukee.

Allied Churches Teaching Self-Empowerment, an affordable housing organization, will present the first annual “DISMAS BECKER Award” to family members of the former state legislator and anti-poverty and civil rights activist who died Sept. 9. The award will be used to honor those who work to address societal problems consistent with Becker’s efforts and the mission of ACTS.

Former Racine Sen. GEORGE PETAK, who recently relocated to the Nashville area with his wife to be near their son and grandchildren, got a Thanksgiving surprise: a visit from Congressman-elect REID RIBBLE. Ribble’s son is a pastor who lives nearby and had connected with the Petaks.

The STEVE and MARY JO BAAS family were awarded a 46-inch LCD TV donated by the Carton Council for coming in first place in the “Waukesha County Reduce Your Waste Stream Team Challenge.” Steve, Mary Jo and their three daughters reduced their weekly trash from 20.8 pounds to 2.1 pounds, an almost 90 percent decrease.
