Wisconsin earns B+ in manufacturing, human capital, low marks in related areas

The Manufacturing & Logistics 2010 National Report compiled by the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University gave Wisconsin a grade of B+ for its manufacturing output, based on the share of total income earned by workers in manufacturing in the state, manufacturing wage premium and manufacturing employment per capita.

Illinois earned a C for manufacturing, while Minnesota earned a B-. Indiana, Michigan and Iowa earned As for manufacturing.

Wisconsin also earned a B+ in human capital, recognizing the quality and high training of the state’s work force.

However, Wisconsin did not fare as well in the other categories the report measured – the state earned C+ grades in logistics, global reach and diversification. The state got C- grades in productivity and innovation and tax climate, a D+ in venture capital per capita and an F in benefit costs.
