After a brief hiatus, SURG Restaurant Group will reopen its flagship Carnevor Steakhouse Moderne 5 p.m. tonight at a new location on the same street.
Carnevor closed the doors at its previous location, 724 N. Milwaukee St., for the last time Saturday night. The restaurant’s new home: 718 N. Milwaukee St., was previously occupied by another SURG-owned restaurant called Umami Moto and has since been renovated.
Omar Shaikh, who co-owns SURG with Michael Polaski, the new location has a few advantages: it has it's own wine cellar (Carnevor used to share Umami Moto's cellar), larger restrooms and a separate bar area.
"The number one complaint at Carnevor was about the single occupancy bathrooms," Shaikh said. "In terms of the look and feel, it's just sort of like the next generation of Carnivor. It’s carnivore 2.0."
Polaski and Shaikh said in August they had decided to move Carnevor because they could not come to terms on a new lease at the restaurant’s previous location.
Restaurant hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
Shaikh said SURGE will close on a new location for Umami Moto on March 4, but would not say where.
"It's nearby," he said.
He also said the restaurant's name may change, although it will have the same menu, executive chef (Israel Cruz) and many of the same staff members as Umami Moto.
