Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport was a little busier in June, when passenger traffic increased over last year.
The airport reported today that 611,001 passengers traveled through in June, up 3.4 percent from 591,145 passengers in June 2015.
Airport leaders attributed the boost to Southwest Airlines’ June addition of a Saturday route to San Diego, California and Frontier Airlines’ new nonstop flight to Philadelphia, also added in June.
For the first six months of 2016, passenger traffic was up 3.2 percent over the first half of 2015. And air freight was up 19 percent over last year’s first half.
Mitchell hosts nonstop flights to 37 U.S. cities. Air Canada, Alaska, Delta, Frontier, OneJet, Southwest and United fly out of the airport.
“New nonstop routes from Frontier and Southwest helped boost our numbers, and I’m glad an increasing number of travelers from both Wisconsin and Illinois are taking advantage of the new service,” said Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. “Booking your travel from our hometown airport helps us recruit more airlines and more destinations, so I encourage travelers in our region to keep choosing MKE.”
