Thomas J. Congdon

Thomas J. Congdon, CPA, MST, has been selected as the new vice president for business and finance/chief financial officer at Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee.

The VP/CFO leads the development of the University’s annual budget and a multi-year financial plan, including the allocation of fiscal resources in support of the University’s academic and administrative programs and priorities; and overall fiscal accountability. Human resources, facilities and risk management are included in the umbrella of responsibilities performed by the CFO. Congdon reports to President James P. Loftus, Ph.D., and serves on the president’s executive cabinet.

He most recently served as Assistant Dean of Finance and Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Previously, he was assistant campus dean for finance and administration-chief financial officer at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha. He also served as assistant dean for business administration in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In these roles, Congdon was responsible for budgeting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, information services, cashiering, human resources, facilities, custodial, risk management, purchasing, food service, bookstore, as well as all other contractual relationships. His nearly 25-year career in certified public accounting, taxation and consulting included service with Virchow Krause & Co, Clifton Gunderson, Grant Thornton and Ernst & Young.

Congdon, who began official duties on July 26, succeeded Tammy Howard, who left the University earlier this year to take the position of CFO at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee.

Loftus, Ph.D. “His expertise in finance and higher education will help us navigate today’s ever-changing environment and further our collaboration with the Wisconsin business community.”

He earned a Master of Science degree in management and his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is also a graduate of the Collegiate Management Institute and has been an active member of the Central Association of College and University Business Officers, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs, and the American Institute of CPAs. As an active member of the community, Congdon has served as a school board member for the School District of Waukesha and as a Waukesha County Board Supervisor.

 

Education: Congdon earned a Master of Science degree in management and his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is also a graduate of the Collegiate Management Institute and has been an active member of the Central Association of College and University Business Officers, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs, and the American Institute of CPAs.
