Racine-based O&H Danish Bakery, famous for its kringle pastries, will expand its business with a fifth bakery location at 5910 Washington Ave. in Mount Pleasant.
The building, which formerly housed the Towne Ford Automobile dealership, is 33,434 square feet. O&H purchased the building and the five acres it sits on for $960,000 and will make a $3.1 million investment in the property, said Logan Martin, community development coordinator for the Village of Mount Pleasant.
“They’re doing a small addition to the dock area, so the total building footprint when they’re done will be 34,873. They are using the whole building,” Martin said.
The plans submitted to Mount Pleasant also show planned future additions to the building, he said.
O&H is growing because of the increasing popularity of its kringle and other Danish pastries and baked goods. Both retail and mail order sales have increased.
The new location will include a baking facility that will help increase capacity, additional office space and a flagship retail store. It will also offer a visitor area that gives a history of the kringle and the Danish baking trade in Racine County.
O&H is celebrating its 65th year in business. The new bakery, which is up for review at the Mount Pleasant Plan Commission meeting on May 21, is expected to open in spring 2015.
