Milwaukee Alderman Ashanti Hamilton will replace Alderman Michael Murphy as the president of the Common Council.
Alderman voted unanimously today to replace Murphy with Hamilton as the council’s leader.
“I believe I have the vision and courage to help build a better Milwaukee,” Hamilton said in a Facebook post. “It’s time to unite this city. I’m the leader to do it.”
Murphy said after the vote that he was proud of the work he and the council accomplished under his leadership, but he said more work needs to be done.
“We’re at a turning point in our city’s history. While progress booms in some areas, Milwaukee still struggles with deep disparities and concentrated poverty in others,” Murphy said in a statement.
