The WAC recently received approval to proceed with the plans for a new club on seven acres at the former site of the University of Phoenix building.

Wisconsin Athletic Club closed on its $3.6 million purchase of the 53,000-square-foot building on Wednesday, Dec. 30. The renovation project will include a 5,000-square-foot addition and a 10,000- to 12,000-square-foot outdoor pool area.

WAC partner Keith Nygren said the club had been looking for “the right location in Brookfield for some time and feel that this is the right place to be, especially considering the explosion of activity in the surrounding area.

The new location is scheduled to open this summer and will be the club’s largest facility to date. It will feature an indoor/outdoor aquatic center with three pools, including a whirlpool, kids’ pool with water features and “expansive outdoor pool deck.” There will also be a cycle studio, two large group fitness studios and a functional training area.

In continuous operation since 1976, the WAC now has seven locations in West Allis, Brookfield, Greenfield, Wauwatosa, downtown Milwaukee, Glendale and Menomonee Falls.

The club is also in the midst of upgrading its downtown facility at the 411 Building. As reported by BizTimes Milwaukee in September, the club extended its lease for 10 years and is expanding into the fifth floor. The additional 7,500 square feet of space will include fitness studios, yoga and Pilates areas and a functional training area. The sixth floor space, which is entirely occupied by the club, is also getting upgrades.

“We are committed to serving the downtown community and are excited to be part of the renewed growth and development we see in the city, particularly east of the river. We are truly dedicated to being here for the long term,” Nygren said.
