YMCA offers free membership access for one week

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee will offer free access to all metro-area YMCA facilities for one week beginning Sunday, Nov. 28 and concluding on Saturday, Dec. 4. The free membership week is part of the YMCA’s Healthy Living Kickoff campaign designed as a way to say thank you to its supporters in the community and get people active and thinking about health and fitness, said Janet McMahon, associate vice president of Healthy Lifestyles at the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee.
“The ‘Y’ is blessed with a great number of supporters in the community and this is one way for us to say thank you to them,” McMahon said. “But it’s also a way for us to let people who aren’t members know what they YMCA is all about and really take advantage of everything we have to offer.”
Participants will be able to explore the wellness centers and program offerings, including various classes at YMCA locations throughout the Metro-Milwaukee area, McMahon said.
“Our hope is that people will discover new ways to improve their personal health and well being and will want to come back to us as a result.”
According to McMahon the Healthy Living campaign is really designed to gear up for the new year membership campaign the Y takes part in every January.
“For us the New Year usually brings a little remorse and a lot of resolve for people,” she said. “We put together a fairly substantial membership program each year to respond to the needs of the community. This is our way of saying come and see what we are all about in preparation for some of the new programming we will have available come January.”
As a prominent advocate of community health and well being, Bevan Baker, Commissioner of Health for the City of Milwaukee, is a supporter of communitywide efforts that not only inspire physical activity, but also encourage health in every dimension of well being.
“Milwaukee offers many ways for people to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” Baker said. “We have amazing parks, bike paths, running trails, many worksite wellness programs, a multitude of Farmers Markets, and, of course, our YMCA’s. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this Healthy Living Kickoff week by visiting one of the many Y locations throughout the city and seeing first-hand how the Y can help you achieve greater health and wellness for your spirit, mind and body.”
