Milk production in Wisconsin during October totaled 2.34 billion pounds, up 2 percent over the previous October, according to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The average number of Wisconsin milk cows during October, at 1.27 million head, was the same as last month, but 2,000 fewer than a year ago. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,840 pounds, up 45 pounds from a year ago.
This is the first time October monthly milk per cow has exceeded 1,800 pounds in Wisconsin.
Milk production in the 23 major ag states during October totaled 16.0 billion pounds, up 3.9 percent from October 2013. Production per cow in the 23 states averaged 1,868 pounds for October, 51 pounds above October 2013. This is the highest production per cow for the month of October since the 23 State series began in 2003.
The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.59 million head, 89,000 head more than October 2013, and 3,000 head more than September 2014.
Milk production in the United States during October totaled 17.1 billion pounds, up 3.8 percent from October 2013. Production per cow in the United States averaged 1,842 pounds for October, 52 pounds above October 2013.
The number of milk cows on farms in the United States was 9.28 million head, 77,000 head more than October 2013, and 4,000 head more than September 2014.
