Wisconsin has 8 companies on the Fortune 500 list and 23 on the Fortune 1000 list for 2020, down from 9 on the Fortune 500 and 25 on the Fortune 1000 in 2019.

Fortune magazine on Monday released its annual list of the largest American companies, ranked based on revenues.

Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson slipped from #492 on the list in 2019 to #519 this year, which resulted in Wisconsin’s Fortune 500 count falling from 9 last year to 8 in 2020.

Zurich, Switzerland-based Amcor Ltd.’s acquisition of Neenah-based Bemis Co. Inc. removed one of Wisconsin’s Fortune 1000 companies from the list. Bemis ranked #618 last year.

Gardner Denver last year agreed to combine operations with Ingersoll Rand’s industrial segment, and move the headquarters to Davidson, North Carolina, costing the state another Fortune 1000 entry. Gardner Denver, which had been based in Milwaukee, ranked #822 on the Fortune 1000 last year.

Of the Wisconsin companies on the Fortune 1000 list this year, Brookfield-based Fiserv made the biggest move, jumping from #488 in 2019 to #311 in 2020. The company’s leap was due to its acquisition of New York-based First Data in a $22 billion all-stock deal.
