Wheaton president Dan Mattes dies at 46

Dan Mattes, president of the central market at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, died unexpectedly on Nov. 8 after undergoing cardiac surgery in Chicago and subsequently suffering a heart attack. He was 46.

“Dan was a natural leader and was widely respected for his sincerity, attentive listening, and the highest degree of integrity,” said John Olivero, President and CEO of Wheaton Franciscan. “In addition to being goal-oriented, he had a unique ability to develop and maintain strong, long-term relationships.”

Wheaton Franciscan has released the following statement regarding Mattes’ passing:

Throughout Dan’s 20 years with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, he demonstrated a rare combination of exceptional relationship management skills, strong analytical abilities, and an unwavering commitment to our ministry and Mission.

“I considered Dan to be a member of my family, and his death is a monumental loss for Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare and all those who personally knew and loved him,” said John Oliverio.

A Certified Public Accountant, Dan joined Wheaton in the fall of 1992 and served in a variety of leadership capacities in the areas of financial analysis, strategic financial planning, cash management and treasury services, business development, and hospital operations. He was promoted to President of the Central Market in the fall of 2008, providing leadership for Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – Franklin and St. Francis and later, Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital.

Dan was instrumental to Wheaton’s success, playing a leadership role in every major initiative over the last decade including the development of Wheaton Franciscan – Wauwatosa, Wisconsin Heart Hospital, Franklin, Midwest Orthopedic Speciality Hospital, St. Francis Outpatient Center, and the Center for Neurological Disorders. A participant in the Wheaton Franciscan Executive Development Program, Dan also earned an MBA from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management in 2006.

Dan was a devoted husband to Kristin and loving father to their four children Amanda, Jessica, Sarah and Luke. In the past he coached Little League baseball teams and served as League Director of the Greendale TWI-nite Little League. Additionally, Dan served on the St. Francis Hospital Board of Directors as well as The Foundation for St. Francis Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing the Dan Mattes Scholarship Fund for a scholarship to be given annually to a Greendale High School student.

Visitation is Thursday, 4 – 8 p.m., at the Max A. Sass & Sons Mission Hills Chapel.
