“What I Didn’t Learn in Business School: How Strategy Works in the Real World”

In their book, “What I Didn’t Learn In Business School: How Strategy Works in the Real World;” authors Jay Barney and Trish Gorman Clifford document how traditional strategy tools taught in business school don’t really apply in the real world and can’t always be relied upon for turning a discovery or an idea into a profitable business.

The book, presented in the form of a business novel, uses the Justin Campbell character, a recent MBA graduate and employee of a specialty chemicals firm, to effectively illustrate the human interaction and political minefields that often exist and even dominate a work place.

In the book, Campbell and his other senior managers in the company are divided over what strategies to deploy because each has big career ambitions and personal conflicts that give each player a reason to block the other players from achieving individual career goals. Campbell, like many real life senior managers, must come up with a strategy to deploy that benefits everyone, including the well-being of the company, and he must do it in a timely manner.

The book retails on 800-CEO-Read for $25.95.
