Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus has rejected a call from a local Democratic Party official to resign over the mishandling of votes in the state Supreme Court race, pledging to serve the remainder of her term.
However, Nickolaus did not say in a statement whether she intends to seek re-election, though she committed to "restor(ing) the voter’s confidence in me."
She was re-elected in 2008 to the office without opposition.
"I understand why people are upset, and I am taking this matter seriously," she said. "Again, I am sorry for my mistake."
Waukesha County Dem Party Chair Victor Weers earlier urged her to resign over last week’s misreporting of voting returns in the race. Nickolaus said she mistakenly left votes from Bookfield out of her initial tally. Once they were added in, a narrow lead for JoAnne Kloppenburg turned into a more than 7,000-vote lead for Justice David Prosser.
"We must have a county clerk that we can trust to do this important work of the people with competence, security and openness," he said. "Waukesha must have a new county clerk now."
