WATER: H20 Score: The power to save

Milwaukee-based H20 Score aims to give consumers the power to control their own water savings by using technology applications that track water usage in different parts of the home.

“We want to empower consumers to take matters into their own hands,” said McGee Young, president and founder of H20 Score.

H20 Score currently has agreements with five Wisconsin cities to allow water customers to utilize the company’s online Water Use Dashboard, Young said. Close to 2,000 homes across the state have signed up to track water usage.

The municipalities pay H20 Score a small fee to offer the service to their customers. “The consumers in our pilot city of Whitewater were able to cut their water consumption down from 161 to 109 gallons per day per household” he said. “We saw tremendous water savings.”

Through connections at the Global Water Center, the company has identified a new market of consumers who don’t receive municipal water bills. The company has launched a second product called Meter Hero for them.

H20 Score has released the beta version of Meter Hero, and plans to work with individuals and classrooms to help people better understand their utilities.
Municipal governments spend $50 billion each year providing water to their residents. “In some cases we’re fighting a battle because municipalities earn money when their residents use more water,” Young said. “As the sustainability of the earth’s water resources becomes even more of an issue, they have to address the problem. These tools can help users really understand their household water consumption, and cut back in areas to help improve water conservation efforts everywhere.”
