GOP U.S. Senate hopefuls Terrence Wall and David Westlake have different takes on the possibility Tommy Thompson may join them in the race for the Republican nomination. But they agree on one thing: They have no plans to get out if Thompson gets in.
Appearing at a Milwaukee Press Club Newsmaker Luncheon on Wednesday, Westlake expressed some concerns over Thompson’s stances on issues such as transportation and health care.
"He was a popular and successful governor, but he was not afraid to spend money," Westlake said.
Wall said he has been in regular contact with Thompson, who "has been very generous with his time." Asked whether he would seek an endorsement from Thompson if the former governor decides not to run, Wall replied, "I think that’s something that’s between the governor and I."
Wall said he is plans to spend a couple of million dollars on the primary and has budgeted $7.5 million to $10 million for the campaign overall, some of it out of his own pocket.
Westlake criticized Wall for previously donating to the campaigns of Democratic Reps. Tammy Baldwin and David Obey.
Wall acknowledged that he has tried “reach across the aisle,” but said, “I made a mistake. I won’t repeat that mistake.”
