The finger-pointing over the problems at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex is now fodder for TV ads.
The liberal Greater Wisconsin Committee this week debuted an ad ripping Walker for his handling of problems at complex.
Walker responded with an ad of his own charging Barrett is using people with mental illness for political gain.
In the GWC spot, the narrator says a county Mental Health Complex patient died of starvation, another was raped by a security guard and the housing of sexually violent men with mentally troubled female patients resulted in 67 sexual assaults.
The narrator then says Walker’s response was to defend county policies, cut mental health care staffing and oppose funding for improved security.
"If Scott Walker can’t manage Milwaukee County, how can we trust him as governor?" the narrator asks.
In Walker’s response ad, he says "real leadership means bringing people together to solve problems" and more than 20,000 people suffering from mental illness are successfully treated each year in Milwaukee County. Still, if one person "falls through the cracks, that’s unacceptable to me,” Walker said.
Walker, looking into the camera in a white shirt and red tie with a dark background behind him, says, "Tom Barrett thinks it’s OK to run ads using people with mental illness for political gain. I think that’s wrong."
