Gov. Scott Walker’s campaign and the executive director of the Wisconsin Republican Party filed a lawsuit in Waukesha County Circuit Court today, alleging that the state elections board’s process for reviewing petitions on recall petitions is unconstitutional.
The suit asks a judge to order that the Government Accountability Board (GAB) look for and eliminate duplicative signatures, clearly fake names like Mickey Mouse and signatures with clearly illegible signatures, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The GAB has said it is up to challengers to point out problems like those and the board itself will not automatically toss the signatures for those reasons.
The lawsuit contends that allowing multiple signatures is a violation of the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution because it harms the rights of those not signing.
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin announced today it has collected more than 500,000 signatures in just 30 days and is well on its way to collecting the minimum needed to initiate a recall election.
