About 1,000 downtown employees have been finding a new place to park this week. The US Bank parking structure at 716 E. Clybourn St. has been closed since Tuesday because of a concern about the movement of a wall.
The movement of a north wall of the structure was caused by excavation work being done on the construction of the 833 East office building nearby. Irgens is building the 17-story tower at 833 E. Michigan St. The general contractor is CG Schmidt Inc.
US Bank first closed the parking structure last weekend and stabilized it with support beams, and it reopened Monday after it was determined safe for use.
“As a precaution, the parking structure was initially closed and some corrective actions were taken on this wall that moved,” said an Irgens spokesperson.
However, an engineer with the original contractor of the parking structure decided to bring in a third party to evaluate the structure, and it was again closed on Tuesday, the spokesperson said. Irgens hopes to have the inspection completed this week.
“Their findings will determine whether the structure is able to be used or if there are some repairs that need to be made,” the spokesperson said.
The nearly 1,000 people who park in the structure are parking at a lot near Henry Maier Festival Park and a shuttle is transporting them to the US Bank Center.
Construction was shut down on Tuesday near the impacted area, but was restarted on Wednesday.
