United Way of Greater Milwaukee exceeds 2014 campaign goal

United Way of Greater Milwaukee surpassed its $53.8 million community campaign goal after raising a total just above $54 million, the organization announced during a Thursday evening community celebration.

The funds, which exceeded the organization’s 2013 campaign results by more than $1.2 million, will benefit more than 80 partner agencies located in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties.

Those agencies align with United Way’s focus on improving education, promoting financial stability and supporting healthy living.

The 2014 campaign, which ran from early September through early December, was chaired by Paul Purcell, chairman and CEO of Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc.; Thelma Sias, vice president, local affairs, of We Energies; and Scott Wrobbel, managing partner of Deloitte LLP. The campaign largely relied on private donations, corporate donations and workplace giving campaigns.

“Today, as a community, we are celebrating exceeding our campaign goal,” David Lubar, president and CEO of Lubar & Co. and United Way chairman of the board said in a statement. “However, we know that our work does not end here. The United Way extends a big thank you to our thousands of donors. We are hard at work to ensure that your contributions are being used wisely and effectively to support those most in need in our community.”

Among the 2014 campaign’s highlights was a record set by Johnson Controls, which again secured the largest annual combined workplace campaign total in United Way of Greater Milwaukee’s history. The company raised $6.1 million, up from its $6 million total last year.

Additionally, eight area companies gave more than $1 million in employee gifts and corporate contributions, with each company besting their 2013 campaign results. Those companies are Northwestern Mutual, which raised $4.2 million; Aurora Health Care, $2.6 million; Fiduciary Management, Inc., $2.6 million; Rockwell Automation, $2.5 million; We Energies, $1.8 million; BMO Harris, $1.5 million; Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc., $1.3 million; and Harley-Davidson Motor Company, $1.3 million.

The 2015 campaign will be combined with United Way in Waukesha County, following a merger of Milwaukee and Waukesha counties’ United Way agencies.

“We are looking forward to even greater things in 2015 as we grow stronger together,” said Mary Lou Young, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Milwaukee and leader of the new organization. “Together we will be able to maximize our customer service and increase our operational efficiency, ultimately resulting in additional dollars available for funding programs that improve lives and strengthen the Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County communities.”
