Two smaller Walmart stores planned in area

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which is planning to add several stores in the Milwaukee area, is planning to open two of its smaller Neighborhood Market stores on the west side of the city of Milwaukee and in Menomonee Falls. They would be Wal-Mart’s first Neighborhood Market stores in the Milwaukee area.

The Neighborhood Market stores are about 40,000 square feet in size and focus on grocery and pharmacy products.

Wal-Mart plans to open Neighborhood Market stores at South 70th and Main Street in Milwaukee and in a former Piggly Wiggly store space at Pilgrim Road and Main Street in Menomonee Falls.

“Our hope for (the store at 70th and Main) is that it is really pedestrian-friendly and neighborhood-friendly,” said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Lisa Nelson. “It’s a great redevelopment.”

A full-size Walmart store is planned at Pilgrim Road and Lisbon Avenue in Menomonee Falls. However, plans for that store are on hold and the developer, Dickson, Tenn.-based Gatlin Development Co., recently rescinded a zoning request for the project, which is opposed by several neighborhood residents.

“We are kind of reassessing that based on the feedback from a neighborhood meeting,” Nelson said. “We’re taking a fresh look at it. We think there is a great opportunity on that site to serve our customers.”

Wal-Mart is also planning new stores on the northwest side of Milwaukee and in Greendale, South Milwaukee and Kenosha.
