The Last Word: Blood Brothers

Scott, John and Kris Droegkamp learned many of life’s lessons from their father, who founded Dave Droegkamp Heating Inc. in Hartland 27 years ago. Perhaps no lesson was more important than to emphasize the importance of keeping family harmony while still maintaining a profitable business that serves all of its stakeholders. That balancing act is not easily attained and requires constant nurturing, according to Scott Droegkamp, who shares his insights about running a family business here.

“If I told you the three of us got along all the time, I would be lying. We have had, and still have, some major battles from time to time. Respecting, listening and compromising are perhaps some of what has kept us together for more than two decades.

“Forbearance and perseverance are words that come to mind when things are not going good and you just stick together because you are brothers. There is no one that knows you better than a brother, so you kind of communicate in a very special way. Parking our egos has also helped us, along with each one working in the field, gaining experience and understanding what goes on in many of the situations that our employees face on a daily basis. Being honest, treating others fairly and truly caring builds trust and respect that trickles on down from ownership, to employees and to the customer.

“When things start to unravel with us, it usually has to do with communication (or lack thereof). It is then time to sit down and speak your heart and resolve whatever is going on. Especially with what is going on in today’s economy. Stressful situations are everywhere, and being able to deal with people, their unique challenges and show that you really care can make a big difference.

“‘Your comfort is our family’s tradition’ is our company’s motto and a legacy that each one of us takes very seriously and is lived out on a daily basis. I guess you could say, ‘It’s in our blood.'”
