Networking and marketing thought leader Joe Sweeney will take the reins of a new class this fall at Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) to teach students how to network effectively in order to advance their own careers and maximize business development.
Sweeney, the former marketing agent for former Green Bay Packer quarterback Brett Favre, will teach his course with an emphasis on putting the professional needs of others first, said Dr. David Borst, dean of CUW’s School of Business Administration.
“Students really need to have it in their minds that with networking they really need to give something to the other person before they can expect something in return,” said Borst, who will grade students in the class.
While Sweeney’s approach to networking and professional development is distinct in focusing on others first, it naturally aligns with the Lutheran-affiliated university’s commitment to instill in students servant leadership, in which they serve others before they can expect to be served.
“His message is very consistent with those of a Christian institution,” Borst said.
Over the 10-week interactive course, titled “Joe Sweeney’s Winning Game Plan,” Sweeney will teach students both in-person and through video conferencing. Sweeney, who has also owned four manufacturing companies throughout his career, will focus on learning outcomes surrounding networking techniques that can help professionals grow business, expand influence or land a desired job. Much of his material will be drawn from his New York Times bestselling book, “Networking is a Contact Sport.”
Sweeney’s class, which is open to the public, is a pass-fail course running from Oct. 9 through Dec. 11. The class will hold at least 200 students and will be held in CUW’s School of Pharmacy building. Cost is $400 per student.
CUW will host a kick-off seminar and information session about the new program on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. in CUW’s Center for Environmental Stewardship, located on the university’s campus at 12800 N. Lake Shore Dr. in Mequon. The session, open to the public, will give prospective students a chance to meet Sweeney and gain a better understanding of the program’s objectives.
