Stocks will need spark to extend rally

The Dow Jones Industrial Average will need an afternoon rally to extend its longest winning streak since 1996.

The U.S. stock market flattened out this morning after the Dow had soared to a record high for 10 consecutive days on Thursday, closing at 14,539.14.

The largest local gainers in the BizTimes Stock Index this morning were Joy Global Inc. (up 39 cents to $62.08) and Weyco Group Inc. (up 39 cents to $24.37).

The stock market rally, coupled with some encouraging data about jobs and the housing market, has prompted many economists to bump up their gross domestic product forecasts to around 3 percent for the first quarter.
