Wisconsin exports increased 11 percent in 2011, growing from $19.8 billion in 2010 to $22.0 billion, according to International Trade Administration (ITA) data.
Wisconsin’s 2011 merchandise export sales increased to many top destinations, including Chile (up 45 percent), Australia (31 percent), Germany (18 percent), Canada (18 percent), and China (4 percent). Key merchandise export categories for the state include machinery, computer and electronic products, food and kindred products, transportation equipment, and chemicals.
“Companies of all sizes across Wisconsin are finding export opportunities, and many more have the potential to do so,” said Damian Felton, director of the U.S. Commercial Service in Milwaukee. “If you can do business in the United States, one of the world’s most open and competitive markets, you’re a likely candidate for doing business overseas. We’d like to help you realize that potential.”
To further expand the reach and availability of export programs to businesses nationwide, the ITA said it has signed a memorandum of intent with the State International Development Organizations Inc. The memorandum expands cooperative efforts in the promotion of federal and state export programs such as trade missions and overseas business matchmaking services, the ITA said.
“Eighty-five percent of world economic growth over the next five years will take place outside of the United States,” said Francisco Sánchez, Under Secretary for International Trade. “As the U.S. economy builds momentum, we must continue to equip U.S. businesses with all the necessary tools to increase exports that support millions of high-paying jobs across the country.”
