State senators will face off for city treasurer

Two Capitol colleagues are set to face each other in the race to be Milwaukee treasurer after making it through the February primary.
Democratic state Sens. Spencer Coggs and Tim Carpenter were the top vote-getters in a four-way primary. Coggs won the primary with 39.93 percent of the vote, and Carpenter was just two points behind.
Dawn Marie Sass and Rick Kissell also were in the race. In a statement, Carpenter thanked all of the candidates “for their dedication to running issue-orientated campaigns.”
In the other city-wide primary race, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett easily advanced to the general election with just over 80 percent of the vote. UW-Extension faculty member Edward McDonald will join Barrett on the ballot in April. McDonald finished well behind the mayor at 15 percent. However, McDonald told WisPolitics he was encouraged by the amount of support he had received since starting his campaign.
“We’re satisfied. We’ve galvanized a lot of people and a lot of people know us a lot better than they did two months ago,” McDonald said.
In the city of Milwaukee, the primary turnout was fairly light with just 12 percent of registered voters casting a ballot.
Along with the mayoral and treasurer races, there were two aldermanic primaries that took place. In the 12th District, Ald. James Witkowiak advanced to the general election, but trailed José Perez by 129 votes out of 1220 cast. In the 8th District, Ald. Bob Donovan had an easier time, winning with 61 percent of the vote. He will face Benjamin Juarez in the general.
