The application period will open Sept. 29. Area businesses and organizations with employer partners can submit applications for up to $200,000 per worker training project. Special consideration will be given to city-based employers.

The project should provide training to Milwaukee residents, with an emphasis on unemployed, underemployed, ex-offenders, first-time graduates, new hires and incumbent workers. The training should be either short- or medium-term with each course or module not exceeding 12 months.

Potential grant recipients must include details on transportation service for city or regional training sites.

Awards will be made in amounts from $5,000 to $200,000 and applications are due Nov. 10. The department will make “intent to award” announcements within 60 days of the due date.

The grants are being made as part of the Wisconsin Fast Forward program and are part of $4.5 million in funding Gov. Scott Walker announced in response to unrest at Sherman Park in August.

The funding also included an allocation for mobile Job Center Access Point events. The department announced it will hold the next two events from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Milwaukee Urban League, 435 W. North Ave., and Oct. 5, at UMOS, 2701 S. Chase Ave.
