Area organizations and companies like Menomonee Falls-based Kohl’s Department Stores have expanded their philanthropic efforts globally to support disaster relief efforts in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.
Kohl’s has committed a $50,000 cash donation to the American Red Cross as the organization delivers emergency supplies and services to the communities devastated by the typhoon, which battered the Philippines two weeks ago.
“We are deeply saddened by the devastation and heartache experienced by so many people throughout the Philippines,” said Michelle Gass, Kohl’s chief customer officer. “Kohl’s is proud to be in a position to help and hopes the financial assistance will provided needed support during this difficult time.”
Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW), located in Mequon, has also created a fundraising initiative to benefit victims of the natural disaster. The university continues to seek financial contributions to add to a pool of funds its faculty, staff and students have collected.
The CUW community initially raised more than $700 in two days to benefit Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregations in the Philippines.
CUW is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
“While we are grateful for the generous gifts, additional financial support is still needed as men, women and children of our sister congregations in the Philippines continue to have little to no access to water, food, shelter and medical attention,” said Kimberly Masenthin, director of Human Resources at CUW.
An eight-member disaster response team organized by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod plans to depart for Manila today to help sister churches in the Philippines recover from the devastation.
