Did you know that in recent years small businesses have created virtually all of Wisconsin’s new jobs? These small businesses are essential to the livelihood of our state. An essential business means one that we regard as fundamental, indispensable, key, necessary, and vital to our economy and workers.
However, these days our state is not holding these essential businesses in that regard. Gov. Jim Doyle’s plan for higher taxes, increased regulation and government intrusion will stifle a good business climate in Wisconsin. I don’t understand how those ideas will help businesses succeed.
Surely certain regulations are beneficial to ensure good business practices, welfare of employees and environmental safeguards, but the current proposals will do more harm than good. In my time as a legislator, I have consistently rejected proposals that force our essential businesses to close or move to other states, while I have supported ideas like research and development tax credits, worker training incentives, and other proposals that lessen the burden and give a helping hand to our businesses and employees.
In my days as a small-business owner, it was my dream to continue to grow the business and hire more people. I placed a high value on my employees and tried to teach and help them so that they too could prosper. When the business succeeded, I loved giving raises to my employees for a job well done. I fear business owners will not be able to do this if these new proposals become law.
Each and every day at the Capitol I make it my mission to fight for what is good for the health of our economy. But today we are at a critical point in our great state. The small businesses of Wisconsin – the essential businesses of Wisconsin – must join me and let their voices be heard. As a business owner, employee or consumer, you are the backbone of Wisconsin. When all of you voice your concerns together, other legislators and the governor will take notice, and the case will be made that these proposals will do real harm. Please take a moment to let the governor know where you stand.
