Sheboygan Kmart to close

Kmart Corp., a subsidiary to Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings Corp., recently informed the state Department of Workforce Development that it will close the Kmart store at 2633 S. Business Dr., Sheboygan, on April 3. South Business Drive is a major retail corridor in Sheboygan.
The closing of the store will put 62 employees out of work.

City officials are considering plans to create a tax incremental financing (TIF) district to stimulate a redevelopment project on the property.
“We have a potential new development going in there, so we have to create a TIF in order to negotiate with a potential new developer about putting up a new retail establishment of that property,” Mayor Bob Ryan said to The Sheboygan Press.

Sheboygan radio station WHBL reported Tuesday that Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Supermarkets INc. plans to open a Pick ‘n Save grocery store at the site. The company currently has two Pick ‘n Save stores in Sheboygan. Both of those stores are on the north side of Sheboygan. The Kmart site is on the south side of the city.
