Sanders appointed executive director of Safe and Sound

After a four-month run as interim executive director of Safe & Sound, Katie Sanders has been selected to lead the nonprofit organization as executive director.

The 16-year-old organization is grounded in a mission to curb violent crime in Milwaukee communities by cultivating partnerships among law enforcement, community organizers and youth.

Sanders joined Safe & Sound last May as development and marketing director and jumped into the role of interim executive director in December, following Barbara Notestein’s departure from the organization. Notestein served as executive director of Safe & Sound for 11 years.

Safe & Sound’s Board of Directors credits Sanders for successfully steering the nonprofit through its time of transition.

“Katie has demonstrated exceptional leadership since joining Safe & Sound and most recently in guiding the organization through a leadership transition,” said Board Chair Kimberly Kane. “She’s talented, strategic and not afraid to ask the tough questions. After an extensive search, we recognized Katie as the right candidate to lead Safe & Sound.”

“I am thrilled and honored to serve Safe & Sound in this capacity,” Sanders said. “Safe & Sound is doing incredible work to improve safety and quality of life in Milwaukee neighborhoods. This is an exciting time for us as we are engaged in a strategic planning process that will strengthen our ability to work with residents, youth and partners to build and sustain safe and vibrant communities in this wonderful city. I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to such an important mission.”

Sanders is a Milwaukee native and previously worked for Marquette University as director of corporate and foundation relations. Her career also includes more than four years as director of development, institutional support, at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
