Salvation Army warns against phony email

The Salvation Army has issued a warning to individuals about a phony email appeal that asks for donations to the Salvation Army’s relief efforts in Japan. While the email uses actual language used by the organization to make a traditional appeal and also lists the organization’s mission statement, the email address being used is not a valid Salvation Army Address, officials said.
"It’s sad that there are people who would use this tragedy as an opportunity to take advantage of others,” said Jeff Stanger, development director for The Salvation Army Indiana.
The phony email asks individuals to send personal information as well as a donation amount, minimum of $100 to an email designated as donations@salvationarmyrelief.zzn.com
According to Faithe Colas, community relations director for The Salvation Army of Greater Milwaukee, the scam was originally reported in Indiana, but as a precaution the warning was issued nationwide.
“I have not received any notification that the phony email has been circulated in the Milwaukee area,” Colas said. “However, as a matter of precaution we want to make sure everyone is aware that the Salvation Army does not have a Japan Relief effort email campaign anywhere in the country.”
Those who wish to donate to the Salvation Army relief efforts in Japan may text JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 to make a $10 donation or they may call 1-800-SAL-ARMY or visit www.donate.salvationarmyusa.org, Colas said.
Checks labeled Japan earthquake relief, may also be sent to The Salvation Army Milwaukee County, 11315 W. Watertown Plank Road, Wauwatosa, WI 53226
