Ryan sees prospects dimming for ‘Path to Prosperity’

U.S. House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) predicts that politics ahead of the 2012 presidential campaign will prevent a comprehensive budget deal this year that includes major entitlement reform and spending reductions aimed at lowering the deficit.
At a Bloomberg News breakfast this week, Ryan said he would be happy this year “with a single or double,” which he described as an agreement on spending cuts and caps tied to a congressional vote this summer to raise the debt limit.
Ryan blamed the dimming hopes for his “Path to Prosperity,” which would overhaul Medicare and Medicaid, on the partisan atmosphere and the White House.
“They (Democrats) are thinking about creating a narrative, which is: ‘If you want security in your life stick with us,” Ryan said, adding that the Democrats are telling people that Republicans “are going to feed you to the wolves in a dog-eat-dog society.”
