Rev. James Martin, S.J., will address Marquette University’s class of 2014 with the commencement speech at the university’s May 18 graduation ceremony, according to an announcement released on Wednesday.
Martin, a New York Times bestselling author, is perhaps best known for his guest appearances on “The Colbert Report,” through which he has become the show’s “official chaplain.” Martin has also appeared as a commentator on “NewHour with Jim Lehrer” and Vatican Radio as well as in the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
He is equally known for his social media activity. On Facebook, Martin’s public page has attracted more than 64,000 followers, and on Twitter he has more than 38,000 followers.
“One year after that the first Jesuit was named pope, I’m thrilled to announce a fellow Jesuit as Marquette’s commencement speaker,” said Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., interim president of Marquette University. “From his bestselling books to his active engagement in social media, Father Martin has helped articulate the values and mission of Jesuits and Catholics across the globe, and I can’t wait to welcome him on campus.”
In addition to serving as commencement speaker, Martin will also receive an honorary doctor of letters degree from the university during the ceremony.
Marquette’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, 1001 N. 4th St. in Milwaukee.
