Red Kettle Campaign falls short

The Salvation Army serving Milwaukee County is continuing to ask the public for donations after its 2013 Red Kettle Campaign fell short of its $3.5 million goal by nearly $240,000.

According to the organization, which offers a range of social services to individuals and families in need, the campaign currently stands at about $3,260,000. The campaign is down almost $39,000 compared to totals in 2012.

The 2013 campaign ended on Christmas Eve, but the Salvation Army will continue to accept donations through Jan. 31, when it hopes to reach its goal.

“We remain hopeful of meeting our Red Kettle Campaign goal of $3.5 million,” said Major Dan Jennings, Salvation Army divisional commander for Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. “Donations from the Red Kettle Campaign support critical year round programming and services for families living in Milwaukee County. Eighty four cents of every dollar donated supports these critical programs and services.”

According to Jennings, a later Thanksgiving cut into the window of fundraising for the Salvation Army.

A stolen Red Kettle at a Wauwatosa Pick N’ Save just before Christmas Eve also complicated this year’s campaign.
