Wisconsin native named CEO of Mortenson Construction. VJS hires new vice president of construction.

Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction recently named Tom Gunkel as its new chief executive officer. A native of Madison, Gunkel began his career at Mortenson in 1983 as a project estimator following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in construction management. In 1987, Gunkel relocated to Milwaukee as project manager on a high-rise office building, and in 1989, he opened Mortenson’s Milwaukee office. Under his direction, that office grew to be the largest construction firm in southeastern Wisconsin. "I welcome the opportunity to honor and build upon the legacy of the leaders that preceded me and to leading this great company and its wonderful people during an exciting period in the construction industry’s history," Gunkel said. "It’s as important to me as it is to the Mortenson family to continue our company’s long-standing tradition of success and to ensure its perpetuation for the benefit of future generations of Mortenson team members."

Pewaukee-based VJS Construction Services recently hired Robert Dakovich as vice president of construction. He has more than 20 years of experience in the construction and development industry.
