Press Club to honor Zilber
The Milwaukee Press Club announced recently that it will present Headliner Awards to real estate developer Joseph Zilber, the founder of Milwaukee-based Zilber Ltd., and former Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan. The club will also present CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier with a Sacred Cat Award, which recognizes excellence in journalism at the national level. The Headliner Awards are bestowed annually to people who are in the news and are making a positive difference in Wisconsin. In the past year, Zilber has donated $30 million to construct a new Marquette University Law School building and $10 million to support the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee accredited School of Public Health, among other donations. He also has purchased and is redeveloping the former Pabst Brewery site in downtown Milwaukee. The awards will be presented during the club’s annual Gridiron Dinner, April 26, at the InterContinental Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. The public is invited to attend the dinner. Nominations sought for CG Schmidt Ovation Award for Volunteerism
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 CG Schmidt Ovation Award for Volunteerism. The award recognizes those who consistently dedicate time away from work to worthy causes through involvement on boards and committees, in projects, at events and in other creative ways. The CG Schmidt Foundation will donate $5,000 to either the nominating non-profit organization or the charity of the winning volunteer’s choice. A $1,000 contribution will also be made to a deserving honorable mention candidate. The CG Schmidt Ovation Award for Volunteerism will be presented on April 30 at the Volunteer Center of Milwaukee’s 26th Annual Volunteer Celebration Luncheon.
State launches waterfront redevelopment web site
Gov. Jim Doyle recently announced the launch of the Wisconsin Waterfront Initiative web site, which provides information and assistance for communities interested in improving their waterfronts. The website for the Wisconsin Waterfront Initiative is located at http://commerce.wi.gov/wisconsinwaterfront. "Wisconsin’s rivers, lakes and streams are among our greatest assets. Revitalizing our waterfronts helps build strong local economies by attracting new business, raising land values, and drawing locals and tourists to a community," Doyle said. "The Wisconsin Waterfront initiative will help communities protect and develop their waterfronts so they can be enjoyed by all for many years to come." The web site includes information on funding, resources, and successful Wisconsin waterfront projects. The best practices section offers a step-by-step guide to the development of a waterfront revitalization project and includes advice on building community-wide support.
