Forums to explore Great Lakes Water Compact
The proposed Great Lakes Water Compact will be debated and discussed during a pair of upcoming forums.
The Waukesha County Chamber of Commerce will host the "Half Empty of Half Full?" form at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 28, at the Country Springs Hotel at 2810 Golf Road in Waukesha. The event will explore the question: "Is the Proposed Great Lakes Water Compact Good for our Community?" Speakers at the forum will include: Peter McAvoy, the vice president for environmental health with the 16th Street Community Health Center; Matt Moroney, executive director of the Metropolican Builders Association; Waukesha Mayor Larry Nelson and Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas. The other forum will be a special Blueprint Briefing beginning at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5, at Discovery World on Milwaukee’s lakefront. At the event, "The Issues and Science behind the Pending Great Lakes Water Compact" will be explored. The discussion, open to the public, will feature: "Great Lakes Water Wars" author Peter Annin; Kevin Wilson, assistant deputy minister of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources; Todd Ambs, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s water division chief and member of the board of the Great Lakes Commission; Moroney; and Ann Beier, director, Office of Environmental Sustainability City of Milwaukee. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee officials also plan a briefing on the science and research behind the policy immediately following the panel discussion. Workshop tonight for near south side development plan
The Milwaukee Department of City Development is hosting a workshop tonight for the public to brainstorm and plan for future development in Near South Side neighborhoods. The workshop will be held from 6-8 p.m. tonight at the United Community Center auditorium, 1007 S. 8th St., Milwaukee. The workshop is part of the process for creating the Near South Side Comprehensive Area Plan, one of 13 comprehensive area plans underway to cover all 99 square miles of the city. The Near South Side Comprehensive Area Plan will cover 6.3 square miles extending from the edge of the Menomonee Valley on the north, to the Union Pacific Railroad near Cleveland Avenue on the South, West Milwaukee’s city limits on the west, and roughly the Kinnickinnic River on the east. The area includes the neighborhoods of Walker’s Point, Clock Tower Acres, Historic Mitchell Street, Lincoln Village, Clarke Square, Forest Home Hills, Muskego Way, Silver City and Burnham Park.
Doyle presents design and construction awards
Gov. Jim Doyle recently presented the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Design and Construction Services to five firms and one individual. The 17th annual awards highlight exemplary design and construction on state building projects that invest in the state’s infrastructure and help to grow the economy.
Milwaukee-based Workshop Architects received an award for their work on the new student union at UW-River Falls. Plunkett Raysich Architects’ Madison office received an award for its work on the Microbial Science Project at UW-Madison. Madison-based JJR LLC, Columbia-based Luhr Brothers Inc. and Franklin-based Habermehl Electric Inc. received awards for their work on Lakeshore State Park in Milwaukee.
