Quad/Graphics closing two plants

Sussex-based Quad/Graphics Inc. has announced it will close its plants in Marengo, Iowa and Pomona, Calif. and eliminate about 200 jobs.

The company acquired the plants when it purchased Baltimore-based Vertis Communications in January 2013. Vertis printed retail advertising inserts, direct marketing and in-store marketing solutions.

“We are closing the plants as part of integrating our two companies’ operations,” said Claire Ho, a spokesperson for Quad/Graphics. “We are consolidating work into where we believe we can achieve the greatest manufacturing and distribution efficiencies.”

The Marengo plant will close in early March, and the Pomona facility will close in early June. Affected employees will receive transition packages, Ho said.

In its third quarter earnings report, the company indicated the Vertis business was experiencing a slower-than-expected turnaround, which adversely impacted its results.
