Quad acquires Mexican creative agency specializing in point-of-sale advertising

Quad/Graphics' Sussex headquarters.

Sussex-based Quad/Graphics Inc. has acquired Mexico City-based Apple Tree Group, a strategic and creative agency that specializes in point-of-sale advertising.

Quad said the deal would strengthen its integrated marketing solutions offerings and will be part of its in-store marketing group. The deal closed on Jan. 22. Terms were not disclosed.

Apple Tree is based near Quad’s Mexico operations and serves clients around the world. The company’s offerings include marketing strategy and creative services for industrial design, visual communications and display solutions.

“Apple Tree has been a trusted partner of ours for several years and, through this acquisition, we are able to further accelerate our transformation as a worldwide marketing solutions partner,” said Joel Quadracci, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Quad.

“Our companies are well-matched, and we look forward to expanding our reach in Mexico and throughout the world, and improving our clients’ marketing experiences through innovative products and services,” said Javier Manzano, who founded Apple Tree in 1991 with his brother Jorge Manzano.

Quad acquisitions over the last several years – including PeriscopeRise Interactive and Ivie & Associates – have bolstered its creative and digital offerings and expanded the business beyond print services.

The company also had its $1.4 billion acquisition of Chicago-based LSC Communications derailed by opposition from the U.S. Department of Justice. Since walking away from the deal, Quad has sold two of its packaging businesses and announced plans to sell its $200 million book printing business.
