Matthew Carlson grew up in Kenosha, and started Platinum Systems, Inc. in his parents’ basement when he was just 18 years old.

Only later did he realize the strategic benefit that starting a business in Kenosha would provide.

“Our growth has been steady,” said Carlson, president of the company. “Being located in Kenosha gave us the unique opportunity to service small to midsize companies in Milwaukee and Chicago without charging premium prices.”

Platinum Systems is a full-service IT firm and single-source provider of computer hardware, software and managed technology.

The firm purchased a new facility in 2011 and recently developed a data center and cloud backup services. It employs 31 people.

“As a business located here, we have an interest in the community’s future success, and we try to give back whenever we can in Kenosha, in Milwaukee, and in Chicago, as well as our other communities,” Carlson said.

Platinum Systems currently serves companies from its headquarters in Kenosha, a small facility in Libertyville, Ill., and is in the process of opening a St. Louis location.

“Our growth has been both organic and strategic,” Carlson said. “We have established decades of trusted relationships and are able to retain customers we’ve had since the company’s founding. We also have a business development team charged specifically with bringing in new clients and keeping them long-term.”

The company has had success finding acquisition opportunities to grow the business, and plans to continue that strategy in Kenosha and elsewhere.

“Our headquarters will always remain in Kenosha,” Carlson said. “We can provide most of our services remotely. As we continue to grow and expand in other markets, our other locations will include sales and technical support staff.”
